1427279 Furniture frames H F HEFENDEHL 4 March 1974 [2 March 1973] 9601/74 Heading A4H [Also in Divisions E1 and F2] A framework unit, for attachment to similar units in the assembly of unit furniture, e.g. bookcases, or for the production of other furniture, e.g. tables, chairs, is composed of at least one frame made up of bars 2 arranged in a rectangular or square plan joined together and to posts 3 by corner pieces 4, the bars and posts 2, 3 being each in the form of a quarter section of an imaginary tube of arcuate, preferably circular, cross-section with its concave face 2a facing outwardly of the frame so that the axis 8 of the imaginary tube is at the intersection of two planes at right angles and containing the edges 7 of the bar or post, the corner pieces 4 being symmetrical with respect to the axes 8 of the two bars 2 and the post 3 which it joins, so that the axes 8 meet at a single point 9, and being formed with concave faces and edges 10, 11 to merge smoothly into the outwardly facing concave faces 2a, and the edges 7, 8 respectively. As a result, two or more of the frame units, when placed together with adjacent edges 7 and 10 or 6 and 11 abutting, present a smooth transition between their adjacent concave faces 2a, building up further parts of the imaginary tube 5 until, with four units juxtaposed as in Fig. 5b, a completely enclosed tubular passage is formed, which may be plugged at its ends. Preferably, the bars 2 and posts 3 are themselves tubular, comprising concentric cylindrical skins closed by walls forming the edges 7, and each corner piece includes a reduced portion 13 forming a spigot on each of its three connecting portions, each spigot entering into the end of a bar or post and being secured in place by a screw 15 engaging a threaded aperture 14 in the spigot. Adjacent frame units are secured together by spring steel clips 17 formed to match the convex side of the bars and posts and having arms 22 which snap into slots 23 in the bars and posts. Supports 18 for filler panels 19 may be pressed out of the clips 17, as shown, or may comprise clips separate from those for securing the frame units together which are then received in additional slots 23, Fig. 6 (not shown).
