Abstract

1427134 Plastics tubes NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP 26 Feb 1973 [21 Jan 1972] 2972/72 Heading F2P [Also in Division A5] A catheter is formed of electrically insulating material incorporating a multiplicity of discrete electrically conductive paths extending from the inner surface to the outer surface of the catheter, said paths being distributed along a substantial length of the catheter and the distal end portion of the catheter being electrically insulating. The catheter may be moulded from plastics material containing an electrically conductive filler, e.g. carbon or a physiologically inert metal, the distal end portion of the catheter being of the plastics material without the filler. In a further embodiment a plastics catheter is moulded to include in its wall a woven braid containing conductive threads which are exposed at points on the inner and outer catheter surfaces. A conductive filament having lateral projections or a conductive helical filament may replace the braid. In another embodiment electrical conductors, e.g. inert metal rivets or staples extend through the catheter wall.
