Abstract

1426675 Marine lifesaving apparatus FRANCE ARMED FORCES MINISTER OF 21 May 1974 [26 June 1973] 22760/74 Heading B7U [Also in Division F2] Underwater escape suit, e.g. for escaping from a submarine or diving bell, consists of a canopy 120 which fits over the head and forms an air bubble for breathing, and a drag device 100 to reduce the rate of ascent in certain circumstances. For example, the device may be arranged to operate only on escape from below 180 metres, when a rapid ascent would carry a serious risk of air embolism. The drag device consists of a spring (see Division F2) which is compressed by water pressure acting on a piston. If a first predetermined depth (e.g. 180 metres) is exceeded a latch is engaged, so that when the escapee rises above a second predetermined depth (e.g. 80 metres) the spring expands to discharge a parachute from a container. The parachute may reduce the ascent rate for the last 80 metres from 3 m./sec. to 0À7 m./sec. The release depth may be adjusted by varying the position of the latching mechanism.
