Abstract
1426648 Mixing apparatus H P HURLIMANN 16 Feb 1973 [18 Feb 1972] 7748/73 Heading B1C In an apparatus for the treatment, particularly mixing, of material, a pair of opposed pressure cylinders 5, 5' Fig. 1, are separated by a nozzle block 1 having at least one duct 4 establishing communication between the cylinders. Pistons 8, 8' in the cylinders are moved by means 7, 7' in particular pistons and cylinders 10, 10' and 11, 11' so that material in the cylinders 5, 5' is moved from one to the other through the ducts. The nozzle block 1 is readily releasably clamped between the cylinders 5, 5' by cylinder and piston means such as a pair of diametrically spaced clamping cylinders 13 (see also Fig. 1a) acting through resilient pads 18, 19 to press cylinder 5 downwardly and similar releasing cylinders 21 acting oppositely. One or more of the ducts 4 may be non- circular, e.g. elliptical, or have constrictions. For example, in plasticising rubber, duct 41, Fig. 7, has bolts 42 adjustably projecting into it, whereas, in Fig. 8, for use in the dispersion process, nozzle block 50 comprises a ring 51 with section elements 52, and ducts 54 located at the lines of separation of the elements have wear-resistant metal inserts 53 for forming the constrictions. The block 41 may have transverse ducts 57 and longitudinal ducts 55, 56 for guiding cooling fluid. The material passing through the block may also be heated and fluids, e.g. gases for use in chemical reactions may be added to the cylinders 5, 5'. A vacuum pump may be applied to the chambers 2, 3 thereof by bore 25, Fig. 1, to remove volatile components.
