Abstract

1426548 Beet harvester RANSOMES SIMS & JEFFERIES Ltd 1 Nov 1973 [2 Nov 1972] 50586/72 Heading A1F [Also in Division C3] A tractor drawn beet harvester comprises lifting wheels 16 mounted at the forward end of the machine within a frame 2, and topping apparatus 24 consisting of a stationary knife 30 and rotatable discs 26 driven by the ground wheels 12, the apparatus being attached to a bar 22 which is pivotally mounted on a subframe 20. The subframe is slidably mounted on bars 18 which extend transversely from the main frame 2. Two probes 40 between which the topped beet is allowed to pass as the machine advances are mounted on vertical pivots 42 at the rear of the subframe Misalignment of the topping apparatus relative to the row being topped produced by variations in the spacing from the said row to the adjacent row which is being lifted by the wheels 16, causes one of the probes to be displaced, this in turn operates a spool valve 38 which causes a hydraulic ram 34 to displace the subframe 20 transversely to the direction of advance until the topping apparatus is realigned with the row. In a modification Fig. 6, the probes 40 are mounted on horizontal pivots 41. Misalignment causes one of the probes to pass over the beet; the resulting vertical displacement is transmitted by a bell crank 56 to the spool valve 38.
