Abstract

1425317 Root harvester RANSOMES SIMS & JEFFERIES Ltd 1 Nov 1973 [2 Nov 1972] 50582/72 Heading A1F [Also in Division B7] A trailed root harvester has rear ground engaging wheels pivoted to a frame and means for automatically steering the wheels in order to maintain the alignment of the machine relative to the row of roots. A pair of probes 20, Fig. 1, mounted on frame 8 brush against the root crops as the machine advances; misalignment of the machine is corrected by either one of the probes being displaced by a root, this in turn operates a hydraulic spool valve 24 causing a hydraulic ram 14 to rotate the ground engaging wheels 4, 5 about a pivot 7 until the machine is correctly aligned. The spool valve is spring biased to a neutral position. The topping apparatus 28 mounted on frame 8 is driven by a gearbox 30, via a cordon shaft 32, shaft 34, chain drive 36 and cordon shaft 38. In a second embodiment, Figs. 3 and 4 motion of the probes 42 which redisplaced vertically by the roots is detected by a proximity switch 46 which is in circuit with a solenoid spool valve 40 causing the ram 14 to operate as before. Hunting is prevented by two further proximity switches 48 placed on either side of the axle 6, these operate the solenoid spool valve to straighten the wheels after alignment.
