Abstract

1426525 Vehicle steering linkage BAYERISCHE MOTOREN WERKE AG 2 March 1973 [2 March 1972] 10367/73 Heading B7H In a motor vehicle of the type having a steering linkage including track rods 5 for transmitting steering movements from a steering member in the vehicle frame to track arms 7 attached to stub axle carriers 6, the track rods 5 are each connected to a track arm 7 by a coupling member 8 of which the joints connecting the latter to the track rod 5 and track arm 7 are pure pivot joints turning about two pivot axes in such a manner that one axis I extends substantially horizontally in the longitudinal direction of the vehicle when there is no lock on the wheels 1 while the other axis II extends in a substantially vertical transverse plane at an angle of inclination # to the swivel axis 9, the point of intersection P 0 of axis II with the horizontal plane containing axis I lying on the outside of axis I, and the other end of the track rod 5 being connected to the steering member in a manner permitting rotation of the track rod 5 about a horizontal transverse axis III. The above described arrangement allows the maximum lock of the wheels 1 to be increased before the turning moment of the track rod 5 reaches zero. In a first embodiment (Figs. 1, 2) the coupling member 8 is pivoted to the track arm 7 about axis I and is pivoted to the upturned end of track rod 5 about axis II. The track rod 5 is connected to steering member 4, e.g. a steering rack, by a ball-and-socket joint 10 which permits rotation of the track rod 5 about axis III. In a modification (not shown) the track rod 5 has a down-turned end and the coupling member 8 is inverted. In a second embodiment (Fig. 4) the coupling member 8<SP>1</SP> is pivoted to the track arm about axis II and is pivoted to the track rod 13 about axis I. The track rod 13 is connected to the steering member (e.g. a central track rod 12 operated by steering mechanism 11) by a joint 15 which permits rotation about two axes 16 and 17. The axis 16 coincides with axis III<SP>1</SP> while a axis 17 allows the track rod 13 to follow the up and down movements of the wheel 1.
