Abstract

1426152 Locking nuts; turnbuckles W STOERRING and H BRUECKMANN 1 April 1974 [22 Dec 1973] 14333/74 Headings F2H and F2G A turnbuckle for use in the rigging of a sailing vessel comprises two nuts 1, 2 in threaded engagement with respective ends of a bolt 6 having a right-hand threaded end and a lefthand threaded end, the middle portion of the bolt having pivoted thereto a double arm lever 7 the arms of which have a U-shaped cross-section to positively engage the nuts 1, 2 to prevent rotation thereof when the lever 7 is in a locking position, and the nuts having at their outer ends connecting members, at least one of which, 11, is articulated to its nut. As shown, the member 11 is of bent steel strip of U-shape, with a peg 12 through its legs, and having a hole 10 through its bight to loosely receive the neck of a bolt 8 screwed into the nut 2 and having a rounded head 9 which may be transversely elongate (Fig. 3, not shown). The pegs 4, 12 of the connecting members are retained by spring rings 5, 16. The nuts 1, 2 are of hexagonal or square external cross-section. The turnbuckle is intended for use with its connecting member 11 slidably engaging a futtock (13) (Fig. 4, not shown) the articulation allowing angular position changes of the turnbuckle without damage by bending.
