Abstract

1383737 Locking nuts; turnbuckles S A KUIPERS 7 Sept 1973 42261/73 Headings F2H and F2G A turnbuckle for use in the rigging of a sailing vessel comprises three aligned sections 4, 5/8 and 9, one end section 4 including a threaded rod portion screwed into an internally threaded sleeve portion 5 of the middle section, and the other end section 9 including an internally threaded sleeve portion into which is screwed a threaded rod portion 8 of the middle section, the threads on portions 4, 5 being of opposite hand to the threads on portions 8, 9, and locking arms 2, 6 pivoted respectively to the rod portions 4, 9 about transverse axes 3, 7, the arms having portions of channel-section for close engagement with the hexagonal section outer circumferences of the sleeve portions 5, 9 to prevent relative rotation between the sections. The pivot pins 3, 7 lock the rod portions 4, 8 to an end fitting 1 and the sleeve portion 5 respect tively. When swung out as shown, the arms 2, 6 serve as handles to adjust the turnbuckle, both arms tending to return to their locking positions under gravity.
