Abstract

1425425 Welding by fusion CLARKE CHAPMAN Ltd 19 April 1974 [18 May 1973] 23712/73 Heading B3R MIG or, using a flux cored wire, MAG welding, particularly underwater and of pipes, is effected using a combined torch (e.g. manual or orbital) comprising a MIG or MAG welding head adjacent a plasma transferred arc cleaning head, the latter immediately preceding the welding head and be arranged to effect cathodic stripping of metal to remove impurities such as weldembrittling adsorbed hydrogen or, in nuclear reactor technology, sodium. The torch may be provided with a trailing shield which closely fits the workpiece, in order that gas, such as CO 2 , may be fed to the space between the welding head and the shield to cool the welded metal to below hydrogen-embrittlement-occurring temperature and to form an ambient water excluding bubble.
