Abstract

1341853 Helically wound tube; welding by fusion STEEL CO OF CANADA Ltd 6 Jan 1972 [8 Jan 1971] 983/71 Headings B3A and B3R A process for producing helically wound pipe comprises continuously delivering skelp to a rolling station, continuously rolling the skelp into helically wound pipe, continuously tackwelding the edges of said skelp together by a gasshielded arc-welding technique, removing the tack-welded pipe to a submerged-arc welding station and converting the tack-weld to a continuous weld. The edges of the skelp are preferably chamfered, forming either a single or double chamfer of about 30 degrees, to provide mating edges prior to the tack-welding. One or two wire MIG (e.g. with argon), MAG (with CO 2 ) or TIG welding or any gas shielded arcwelding technique may be used in which the gas is either an inert gas or CO 2 , or a combination of these, and which employs a consumable or non-consumable electrode. In the particular embodiment a MIG head 18 has a wire feed 20, gas shielding lines 22, water cooling pipe 24, and support 25. The gap between adjacent edges is controlled by a mechanism 26 such that tack-welding occurs at the lowermost point of the pipe 12. Lengths of tack-welded pipe can be severed from one another by conventional methods, e.g. sawing, gas cutting.
