Abstract

1425034 Refractory diffuser element MORGAN REFRACTORIES Ltd 7 March 1973 [13 March 1972] 11590/72 Heading B5A [Also in Division F4] A cast refractory diffuser, for feeding gas, e.g. nitrogen into molten aluminium or other fluid material at high temperature, e.g. during purification thereof, comprising a tubular inlet stem integral with a hollow, gas-permeable outlet head extending laterally from the stem is made using, at least for the outlet head, a compressible fugitive casting core which maintains its shape during casting of the refractory from an aqueous mix but yields to shrinkage of the cast during drying and commencement of firing and is destroyed before completion of firing. The refractory may be silicon carbide bonded with carbon, alumina or clay, but is preferably a zirconia-mullite bonded silicon carbide. It may be cast in apparatus, Fig. 3, comprising plaster mould parts 7, 8 each having a cavity 9, 10 which together define the cavity for the diffuser to be produced and base 11, through which passes a withdrawable metal core 12, 15 to form the bore of the inlet stem. At its top, core 12 has a dowel 13 to locate in a socket 14 in a compressible, combustible core 15 forming the interior of the diffuser head. Core 15 is located by pins 16 withdrawable through holes 17. Core 15 is preferably a cellular plastics material, e.g. rigid polyurethane which leaves only a small residue on firing.
