Abstract

1423792 Screw press W BRAUER 31 Jan 1974 [31 Jan 1973] 04635/74 Heading B3H A screw spindle press has a push member 3 carrying a working tool and driven by a rotatable mass 12 which is selectively coupled to the spindle 5 of the press by a hydrostatic coupling. The spindle engages with a nut 4 held against rotation in the push member 3 so that the push member moves axially as the spindle is rotated. The hydrostatic coupling is a gear pump with a middle wheel 7 keyed to the spindle in mesh with pinions 10 spaced around the middle wheel and mounted on the pump housing 11. The housing is rotatable and rigidly connected to the mass 12 which acts as a flywheel. The housing and/or the flywheel carry rotor bars 13 of an electric motor whose stator 14 is fixed to press frame. The return stroke of the push member 3 is effected by hydraulic rams 18 which are pressurized during the downstroke. The pump is supplied with fluid between its intake and delivery sides under the control of a magnetically, hydraulically or compressed-air operated valve. When the valve is closed the fluid flow between the intake and delivery sides of the pump is blocked and a pressure is established in the pump which prevents the pinions 10 rolling on the middle wheel 7. Thus the spindle is rotated by being coupled hydrostatically to the flywheel. The valve is opened rapidly at the end of the working stroke by the consequential pressure rise.
