1423677 Washing apparatus BAGGERMAATSCHAPPIJ BOS & KALIS BV 4 Dec 1973 [11 Dec 1972] 56210/73 Heading B1Q [Also in Division Cl] Sand is de-salted by passing it downwards through a bunker 3 counter-currently to desalting water and regulating the concentration of sand in the region of the inlet 4 for the water at at least 15% volume, preferably 18-25%. A meter 10 is suitably provided to measure the sand concentration. The sand concentration may be controlled by regulating the supply of fresh water through the grid 4 and/or the discharge of de-salted sand from the bottom 9 of the bunker 3. The sand may be supplied to the bunker suspended in sea water, in which case the desalting water has a lower chloride content than the sea water, or in substantially dry form.
