Abstract

1423414 Feeding sheets HARRIS CORP 28 June 1973 [13 July 1972] 30745/73 Heading B8R Folded signatures are separated from a pile and deposited on a support plate 17; Fig. 1, having a flat end part 17a, the folded end of the signature resting against a stop 18 and the open end projecting beyond the plate past 17a towards a first opening drum 20, which cooperates with a second opening drum 25 to open the signature and deposit it on a saddle 27. One face of the signature may project beyond the other. The drum 20 comprises a peripheral gap with an anvil 23, Fig. 4, against which both faces of the end of the signature are clamped by cam-actuated gripper fingers 21 or long grippers. Also provided on the drum 20 is a cam-actuated short gripper 42, a suction gripper 56, Fig. 5, in the plane of the anvil, and an auxiliary sucker 66, Fig. 6, on the drum periphery. In operation as the drum 20 rotates, a sharp bend is produced in both parts of the signature end, so that when the long grippers are released, the outer part springs towards the drum 25 to be gripped by suckers 24. The inner part remains secured to the drum 20, by the short gripper sucker 56 or sucker 66, according as it is longer than equal to or shorter than the outer part.
