Folded sheets 6, having either half of the sheet protruding beyond the open side thereof, are fed towards grippers 3 on a rotating cylinder 4 with their open side foremost, and are opened and placed over a saddle 8. As shown, a known separating device 1 feeds each sheet over a board 2, the top half of the sheet projecting at 7 beyond the bottom half, and the edge 7 strikes a number of movable abutments 5 having notched faces, so that the abutments are displaced rearwardly and, in so doing, raise the edge 7 away from the edge of the lower sheet half. Thus, the lower half of the sheet is exposed and is grasped by the grippers 3. The edge 7 is stripped from the abutments by a stripper 21 and falls down freely over one side of the saddle 8, and the grippers 3 release the other sheet half at the other side of the saddle. When folded sheets having the bottom half projecting are fed, the members 5 are either removed or put out of action. In Fig. 2 (not shown), the front edge 10 of the top half of the folded sheet is lifted by a rotating sucker 9 before the edge of the bottom sheet half is engaged by rotating grippers 11. The sucker 9 may be oscillated. The top half of the shee can be engaged by suckers 13, Fig. 4 (not shown) which hold it back sufficiently to expose the front edge of the lower sheet half before the latter is engaged by rotating grippers 14. A curved recess in a guide plate receives the humped portion 15 of the top sheet half during the retardation thereof by the suckers 13. The top half of the folded sheet can be engaged by a suction drum 17, Fig. 5 (not shown) having a peripheral speed equal to the speed of the sheet, and suckers 18 can engage the bottom half of the sheet to accelerate it momentarily until the exposed edge thereof is engaged by grippers 20.
