Abstract
1422825 Fire fighting appliance WATERJEL INTERNATIONAL PTY LTD 29 June 1973 [29 June 1972 28 Feb 1973] 31120/73 Heading A5A A fire fighting appliance comprises a container and a foldable, flexible sheet material carrier therein which is saturated with a stable aqueous mixture comprising a thickening agent and a bactericide and having a viscosity (defined) at 23C of between 250 and 10 of recoil as defined in the specn, the amount of mixture being in excess of that required to saturate the carrier. The container may be of synthetic plastics, laminated foil or metal. In Fig. 1 the container is of polypropylene and has body part 13 engaged with lid 14 by quick release catches 15. In another preferred embodiment the container comprises an envelope of an aluminium reinforced heat-sealable synthetic plastic having a line of weakness at one end to permit rapid opening. The carrier may be a woven or non-woven fabric which is preferably non-inflammable and non-heat softening, particularly an intercellular weave fabric, wool alone or in combination with another fibre being preferred. The thickening agent may be a polysaccharide (a number are specified) or polyacrylamide. The bactericide is preferably one or more of tea tree oil, "Resiguard" (R.T.M.) and "Phenonip". An amount of 0.1- 10% by wt. thickener and a total of 0.7% baotericide, relative to the total aqueous mixture, is preferred. The mixture may also contain a bio-degradable surfactant, solubilisers e.g. glycerine, colouring agents, perfumes and builder salts. In Fig. 1 carrier 11 is an intercellular weave of pure wool, and colloidal dispersion 12 is a 0.5% dispersion of a 50/50 mixture of xantran and locust bean gums containing 0.4% tea tree oil, 0.2% "Resiguard", 0.1% "Phenonip", 0.1 % of a surfactant mixture of alkarylpolyglycol esters, cocoalkylolamide and amine-neutralised tridecylbenzene sulphonate, and 1 % glycerine, all by weight. The appliance may be applied manually to a fire or to a burn victim.
