Abstract

1422463 Cylindrical mills LONZA LTD 7 March 1973 [8 March 1972] 11228/73 Heading B2A A cylindrical mill for defibering tangled fibrous materials in a suspension comprises a rotor 3 arranged to rotate about its longitudinal axis in a stator 1 whose inner cross-section bounds a circle. The stator casing has a peripheral series of axially extending recesses in the wall and the rotor has a corresponding series of flat sides 2. The rotor may be triangular with sharply rounded corners. Alternative cross-sections are shown in Figs. 4, 5, 6. Raw material is supplied via a feed line 4, and fluid via a line 7. Fluids may be water/glycol acetone, alcohols or other hydrocarbons. Gas is removed via a vent 8. Discharge is via outlets 6. A space is provided before the rotor to permit thinning of the suspension. More than one rotor may be provided. Typical fibrous material may be monocrystalline whiskers e.g. SiC or Al 2 O 3 .
