Abstract

1421790 Thermal storage heating STORI & CO 16 March 1973 [16 March 1972] 12776/73 Heading F4U A thermal storage unit 5, formed of bricks and heated by electrical elements 4, is formed with cavities 50 into and out of which heat exchangers 7 of a secondary heating system are movable. The heat exchangers 7 each comprise vertical inlet and outlet tubes interconnected by horizontal tubes, and further tubes including flexible portions connect the heat exchanger tubes to the exterior of the apparatus. The secondary heating system is suspended from two chains and is partially balanced by a counterweight 8. The heat exchangers 7 are raised into the cavities 50 by a drive means including an electromagnetic clutch 6 which is engaged only when electrically energized whereby when the power is cut off the heating system will descend under gravity. In a modification, the clutch is controlled by a thermostat in accordance with the temperature of the secondary heating system. In a further embodiment (not shown), the secondary heating system is stationary and the thermal storage block 5 is movable vertically.
