Abstract

1421738 Hedge trimmer DUNLOP LTD 9 Feb 1973 [19 Feb 1972 (2) 2 Nov 1972] 7770/72 7771/72 and 50652/72 Heading A1E A light-weight hedge trimmer comprises a housing 1 on which a comb 2 of flattened tubular form is mounted on a spigot 3. A thin steel cutting blade 8 has teeth 9 exposed in notches 10 formed along one edge of the flattened portion of the comb 2. An electric motor 17 drives a pinion 19 which in turn drives a wheel 24 which carries a crank pin 27. An extended portion 29 of the blade 8 is looped around a bush 28 on the crank pin so that it flexes from side to side while transmitting the reciprocating motion to the blade when the crank rotates. The cutting action is provided by the teeth of the blade 8 working with teeth 13a cut in a hardened steel ledger plate fitted inside the comb. Adjustment of the centre distance between gears 19 and 24 is obtained by suitable rotational positioning of an insert 30 which carries an eccentrically mounted spindle 26. In an alternative embodiment the comb 2 is manufactured from a plastics material as is the flexible part of the blade, steel inserts providing the cutting edges.
