1437184 Planing attachment J COWIE 9 Oct 1973 [10 Oct 1972] 46561/72 Heading B5L A planing attchment for a power hand tool 26, Fig. 1, comprises a frame 1 provided with a plane surface and an opening 5 therein, a cutter 6, Fig. 3, fitted with a first driving member, and rotatably mounted on the frame so that part of the cutter projects through the opening 5, and holding means 27, Fig. 1, intended to secure the attachment to the casing of the power tool. The holding means are pivotally adjustable about an axis 28 on the frame 1 in order that the distance between the holding means and the cutter may be varied so that, in operation, the tension of an endless flexible driving means coupling the first driving member to a second driving member fitted to the drive shaft of the power hand tool held in the holding means may be adjusted. As described an electric or pneumatic drill 26 is held in the holding means 27 and its position is determined by a bolt 30 threaded in a bar 32. The drive shaft of the drill carries a pulley or sprocket 33 which via a belt or chain 34 drives a pulley or sprocket on the shaft 10 of the cutter 6. A shield 36 for the belt or chain is provided. The cutter 6, Fig. 3, includes a pair of adjustable blades 7 and the bearings 11 for its shaft 10 are carried by a rigid plate 13 and a spring plate 12. The depth of cut produced by the cutter is adjusted coarsely by adjusting the position of the plate 12 along studs 15 on the base 2 using nuts 16, 17, and is adjusted finely by a knob 18 and a rod 19 threadedly engaged with a nut secured to the plate 13. In a second embodiment, Fig. 4, cutter blades 45 of the cutter are adjustably mounted in cylindrical blocks 40 received in corresponding recesses in the cutter body so that the angle of the blades as well as their amount of projection from the cutter body can be varied.
