818,303. Hedge cutters ; mowing machines. SUHNER, W. Nov. 7, 1955 [Nov. 8, 1954], No. 31726/55. Classes 6(2) and 6(3). A device for trimming hedges, shrubs and the like, comprises a rotary cutting member 5 having curved cutting edges 9, together with a guard 2 having a plurality of teeth extending in a plane parallel to that of the cutting member, each tooth comprising a root portion 14 which is inclined rearwardly with respect to the direction of rotation of the cutting member, and an outer portion 13 which is inclined relative to the root portion. Really, the cutting edges 9 of the member 5 should be in the form of logarithmic spirals, but in practice they may be semi-circular, or have an elliptic configuration. In operation, the material 16 to be cut is entrained between the teeth of the guard and severed by the member 5. To increase the efficiency of the device, that side of the root portion 14 of each tooth which cooperates with the cutting member to effect a cut may be provided with small tooth-like protrusions, or in the case where grass is to be cut, the teeth may be formed to engage over the edge of the cutting member.
