Abstract

1421154 Belt and chain gearing CITY UNIVERSITY B M HAYWARD and J A OSTLE 10 April 1973 [10 April 1972] 16411/72 Heading F2Q [Also in Division F1] A chain or toothed belt 18 providing the drive between a crank-shaft 17 and two auxiliary shafts 10 and 11 of an I.C. engine is engaged by an idler 19 to take up slack and by two idlers 21 and 22 which are adjustable to vary the timing between the shafts. The shafts 10 and 11 may be overhead cam-shafts, one operating inlet valves and the other exhaust valves. The idlers 21 and 22 may be adjusted manually by adjusters 27 and 28 or automatically in accordance with an engine operating condition by means of electric servomotors, pneumatic relays employing intake vacuum or compressed air or hydraulic relays operated by oil from the engine lubricating system or a separate pump.
