Abstract

1421085 Pipe-line pig launcher/receiver M H GROVE & J M E GROVE [trading as M & J DEVELOPMENT CO] 5 Feb 1974 [20 Feb 1973] 05315/74 Heading F2N Apparatus for receiving, Fig. 5 (not shown), or, as shown, launching a pipe-line sphere 46 includes a generally cylindrical housing 10 having a removable cover 11, a sealing assembly 21 movable by piston/cylinder assembly 24 between the position shown, where it sealingly engages surface 12 to isolate section 10a from section 1Oc and a withdrawn position (not shown) in which movement of the sphere between sections 10a and 10c is permitted, a lateral branch 14 for connecting section 10a to the pipeline, and a valve-controlled by-pass 48, 48a for equalizing the pressures in sections 10a and 10c and for accommodating the fluid flow between these sections which is occasioned by movement of assembly 21. Launching.-From the position shown, bypass 48 is opened to equalize the pressure on either side of the sealing assembly 21, which is then moved to its withdrawn position. The sphere moves under gravity into pipe-line 15. Assembly 21 is then returned to the position shown. By-pass 48 is closed, and a vent 52 and a line 53 are opened to drain section 10c. In moving assembly 21 into its sealing position, its two annular sealing lips are flexed, thus reducing the fluid pressure therebetween. This reduced pressure is indicated at 50 and should it rise to the line pressure, indicated at 51, then a leakage past assembly 21 must be assumed. If no leakage is indicated, cover 11 can be opened for loading another sphere 46 by means of hoist 44, 43 and suction head 47. The pressures at 50 and 51 may be applied to a differential pressure switch (Fig. 5) which lights appropriate lamps and automatically retains cover 11 locked closed if the pressure differential falls below a certain level. Receiving.-The apparatus shown in Fig. 1, excepting the hoist, is re-orientated so that branch 14 connects upwardly to the pipe-line and section 10a is higher than section 10c, the inclined position of housing 10 being preserved. Bars in the pipe-line divert a sphere into branch 14 where it is halted by a bar carried by and movable with the sealing assembly. On withdrawal of the latter, the sphere moves under gravity into section 10a and thence into section 10c. After the sealing check procedure outlined above, cover 11 is opened to expel the sphere.
