Abstract

PURPOSE: To provide a pipe-connecting apparatus wherein a fixing device for fixing the relative behaviors of two pipes is provided, the fixing device carrying out fixing and releasing operations by means of a fluid mechanism, and thus strong connection of the pipes and easy separation thereof being made practicable.
CONSTITUTION: If pipes 1, 2 are connected to each other on the sea-bottom, etc., an inert gas such as N2 gas is sealed in an accumulator chamber 19 in a socket body 5 under increased pressure, then the pipes 1, 2 being dropped to the sea- bottom at a predetermined site, and a spherical body 4 being inserted into the socket body 5. Then, if a pressure oil is fed from an outer oil pressure source to a passage 16 through a releasable block 18, a piston 11 drops, and the escape of the spherical body being eliminated by a retainer 8. Then, a pressure control valve 23 being opened with an increase in the pressure in the chamber 10, a pressure oil being fed to a backpressure tube 7 to carry out sealing, and at the same time, a piston 20 being moved left. The piston 11 is maintained at the said operation site by the pressure of the inert gas in the chamber 19.
