Abstract

1,122,856. Pneumatic dispatch apparatus. INTERNATIONAL STANDARD ELECTRIC CORP. 18 March, 1966 [22 March, 1965], No. 11977/66. Heading B8A. A section of a pneumatic tube conveying system is adapted to brake the carriers pneumatically and is provided with pressure relieving means causing air compressed in the space ahead of a moving carrier to be transferred to the rear of the carrier to prevent reversal of the carrier's motion. As shown, the braking section AC is closable by flaps 2, 3 and is provided with air-receiving vessels 4, 6 connected to the section by valves 5 consisting of flaps with choke holes in them. As a carrier moves through the section, most of the air compressed ahead of the carrier is forced into the vessels 4, 6, the remainder of the air being forced through chokes 9, 10 in by-pass tubes 7, 8. The arrangement is such that the slow leakage of air from the vessels 4, 6, after the passage of the carrier and through the chokes 9, 10 prevents any tendency for the carrier to be reversed. In a second embodiment (not shown), air pressure ahead of a carrier is leaked to the rear of the carrier by having a widening of the bore of the tube 1 along the braking section.
