1420745 Sewing; attaching hooks NEWEY GOODMAN LTD 29 Dec 1972 [31 Dec 1971] 60971/71 Heading D1G A device forming an attachment for or a part of a sewing machine to assist the sewing of hooks to articles, e.g. between layers 19, 20, Fig. 3, of tape, the hooks each comprising a base 1, Fig. 1, and a bill 7, comprises a hook supply chute 45, Fig. 5, down which hooks pass one behind the other with their bills uppermost, the lower end of the chute having a spring latch to hold the leading hook until it is withdrawn by a peg 67 on a lever 66, Fig. 7, pivoted at 65 to a slide 60 carried in a bed 51 mounted on a base plate 50, the withdrawing movement of the lever being to the right in Fig. 7 and being effected by a spring (not shown), engaging an arm 62 fixed to slide 60, when a lever 85 carrying a roller 65 is freed by a cam 82. The lever 66 is pivoted against a spring by a screw 81 on a lever 77 actuated by a cam 72. The bed 51 is then moved between stops 58, 57, against a spring, by a lever 53, arm 55 of which is engaged by a lever 78 actuated via lever 74 by a cam 71, to move the hook to the sewing station where it is held by the peg 67 until the machine has sewn several stitches 23, the machine preferably being of the swing needle type. Thereafter the lever 66 is tilted to release the peg from the hook and the tape feeds starts for further sewing while bed 51 is returned by its spring and slide 60 is moved to the left by cam 82. When sewing of the hook is completed, the tape feed is stopped and peg 67 is lowered to engage the next hook in the chute. This hook is then moved to the sewing station as previously described. All the control cams are mounted on a cam shaft 39 which is rotated intermittently via gearing from the machine drive. A cam is provided on the shaft to govern lateral swinging of the needle, and this arrangement, together with the intermittent tape feed mechanism, may be of the kind described in Specification 1415493. If there is no hook present in the chute for engagement by the peg 67, the lever 66 pivots further than usual to engage, with its right hand end, a switch which stops the machine. A manually-operable lever 88 may be depressed at will to hold lever 66 and prevent peg 67 from engaging a hook. If a malformed hook prevents the peg from removing it from the chute, then as slide 60 moves to the right, the lever 66 will pivot to engage the aforementioned switch to stop the machine.
