Abstract
1420627 Artificial foot CHAS A BLATCHFORD & SONS Ltd 9 Jan 1974 [11 Oct 1972] 46863/72 Heading A5R An artificial foot has a rigid plastics centre portion e.g. of self-skinning polyurethane foam with a flexible reinforcing strip e.g. of balata belting or polypropylene connected to the rigid plastics material by moulding the latter to the strip. The solid ankle, cushion heel foot of Fig. 1 has a strip 3 extending into toe 2B and connected to centre portion or keel 1 by plugs 4 of the keel material entering inverted frusto-conical holes 4A in the strip. End face 4B is inclined rearwardly and upwardly to key it into keel 1. A softer outer portion of a self-skin forming kind of rigid plastics foam with an integral cushion heel 2A and toe 2B is foamed around the assembly of keel and strip. The embodiment of Fig. 2 incorporates a solid heel. The upper part of keel 5 is stepped at 5A, 5B, 5C to form a seating for a thin vacuum-formed plastics shell 8 which encloses rubber buffers 6A, 6B and pivot 6 which co-operates with inverted U-bolt 9 to form a uni-axial ankle pivot. Shell 8 is open at its bottom, and at its top 5D to fit around cosmetic fairing 7B. Toe 10, of the same material as keel 5, is connected to the latter by strip 11. The gap between toe and keel is filled by an expanded polyethylene cushion 13. In manufacture, keel 5 and toe 10 are foamed in a mould onto strip 11 and the assembly bonded to shell 8. An expanded polyethylene flexible sole 13A is attached to the underside of keel 5, the whole foot then being enclosed in a polyvinyl chloride cover 14. The embodiment of Fig. 3 (not shown) does not include a separate sole, shell or cover. In manufacture, the strip is located in a mould and the keel and toe foamed onto it. The assembly is located in a second mould and a cover (15) foamed around them. The keel is cut back at the heel (17) so that the cover may be thickened in this region to form a cushion heel (15A).
