Abstract

1419781 Exhaust silencers NORTON VILLIERS Ltd 17 Oct 1973 [28 Oct 1972 18 April 1973] 49804/72 and 18675/73 Heading F1B An exhaust silencer comprises inner, intermediate and outer tubes 10, 18, 19, a passage 23 between the intermediate and outer tubes ending in a slot 28 and having a length at least fifty times the slot height and one or more chambers 42, 43, 44 between the exit openings of the inner tube 10 and the inlet to the passage 23, the walls of which are imperforate. The cross-sectioned area perpendicular to the gas flow direction is everywhere at least as great as the cross sectional area of the inlet to inner tube 10. The exit opening of the inner tube leads into a diffuser 12 having slots 17. The outlet slot may be continuous and in the form of a circle, oval, rectangle or of sinuous shape or it may be of finite length and straight or arcuate. The chambers 42, 43, 44 act as resonators and are tuned to different frequencies and inter-connected by tuned pipes 37 and 40. Further attenuation is provided by a dead air space 45.
