1394605 Silencers for gaseous currents MOTOR CONDENSATOR WALKER MFG CO GmbH & CO KG 24 April 1972 [14 Feb 1972] 18859/72 Heading F1B Sound muffler for gaseous flow comprising a casing with a resonator chamber at one end of the same cross-section as the casing, a resonator tube connecting the resonator chamber with the remaining volume of the muffler, the resonator tube having a length greater than the axial length of the resonator chamber and serving to attenuate low gaseous flow frequencies, at least part of the length of the or each resonator tube being disposed in the resonator chamber and any remaining part of the length being disposed in the remaining volume of the muffler. Casing 20 is closed at each end by covers 21 and 22 and is divided into four chambers by partitions 23, 24 and 25. Exhaust gas enters the muffler through either of the tubes 28 or 29 and flows consecutively through the perforated pipes 17, 18 and 19. Opposite the inner end of pipe 19 is the mouth of a resonator tube 30 which leads into resonator chamber 26. The tube is curved so that it extends transversely across chamber 26 to enable its length to be increased in comparison with a tube extending only parallel to the axis of the casing. In a modification Fig. 4 the tube 30 consists only of a straight tube which is secured e.g. by welding to the partition 25'. The tube and partition have aligned openings 32' and the tube is closed at the end nearest the opening. In a second modification Fig. 5, the resonator tube 35 is contained within the gas flow tube 19", and extends through the partition 25"into the resonator tube 26". In a construction of this type the tube 35 may also have a bent portion similar to that provided in the construction shown in Fig.3.
