Abstract

1418895 Cable joint POST OFFICE 5 March 1973 [3 March 1972] 10181/72 Heading H2E Coaxial cables are joined by butt brazing the inner conductors 7, followed by connection of the cut-back outer conductors 5 by brazing to a longitudinally divided ferrule 11 having inner diameter matching that of conductors 5, and end recesses to accept the outer diameter of conductors 5. The steel tape screen 3 of a known type of coaxial cable may be continued across the joint via a steel tube 8 slipped over one cable end before jointing and positioned to bridge the completed joint, optionally insulated from the outer conductor. A heat shrinkable plastics sleeve 9 may also be slipped over one cable end before printing, and finally shrunk in position to protect the completed joint. In making the joint the paper tape wrapping 1 outside the steel tape screen 3 is cut back, with the screen 3, outer conductor 5 and inner conductor 7 projecting stepwise. Before jointing a mandrel (Fig. 2, not shown) is slipped over the inner conductor to size and prepare the outer conductor end, and to enable the inner conductor to be trimmed to the correct projecting length; split PTFE spacers are then slipped over the inner conductor into the mouths of the outer conductor, and a spacer is placed at the joint itself.
