Abstract
1418062 Battery charging systems INPEL (PTY) Ltd 1 Feb 1973 [7 Feb 1972 13 Oct 1972] 5176/73 Heading H2H [Also in Division G3] Apparatus for charging a battery comprises a diode bridge rectifier 4 connectable to a mains supply 1, a D.C. to D.C. converter 5 controlled by a pulse width modulator 6 and a current detector 8 for controlling the output current of the converter. To ensure that sufficient output power is provided for charging the battery, several similar apparatuses 2, 3 may be connected in parallel and controlled by a central control circuit 7. The current detector 8 is of the current mirror type and provides an output 42 to the modulator 6. The modulator 6 supplies control pulses on output leads 42 to the bases of transistors in a bridge drive circuit for an output power transistor in the converter 5. The detector 8 and the modulator 6 control the output power transistor which is connected in series with the battery to ensure that a constant current is supplied to the battery. The converter may comprise thryristors instead of transistors.
