Abstract

1416941 Frequency dividers; electronic time pieces DYNACORE SA 15 Aug 1973 [24 Aug 1972] 39595/73 Heading G4D [Also in Division G3] A generator for providing isochronous pulses, such as for driving a clock, watch, computer &c., comprises a high frequency oscillator 1 feeding a counter 4 which is reset to zero each time it reaches a predetermined count stored in a programming device 5 which has means for receiving a standard reference period and redetermining the predetermined count in accordance with the period. Normally the counter 4 counts from the oscillator 1 through a selector circuit 2; its parallel outputs sbm are compared with a predetermined value in a memory 6 by a coincidence circuit 8 which delivers an output pulse at SS and resets the counter via a reset circuit 11. The output may for instance be at one pulse per second to control the balance wheel or tuning fork of a watch or a stepping motor of a clock. The reference period is determined by two spaced pulses applied at ER. These may be derived from a flashing light or magnetically, requiring no connections, if the generator is in a watch. The application of the first pulse causes the counter to be reset to zero via the reset circuit 11; a gate circuit 7 to be enabled so that the memory follows the output sbm of the counter; the output SS to be inhibited by a circuit 9 and the input selector circuit 2 to be changed over so that the counter now counts at a reduced rate (e.g. <SP>1</SP>/ 10 ) via a divider 3. The application of the second pulse then restores all the circuits; thus the memory which now contains a count equal to the reference period is disconnected from the counter by gates 7 and normal counting continues. The ratio of the output period at SS to the standard period may be varied by altering the division ratio of divider 3; a circuit p may be included to do this according to a coded signal applied to ER. In an alternative arrangement (Fig. 1B, not shown) the counter may be reset to the value in the memory and then count down to zero; the coincidence circuit 8 can then be replaced by a simpler null detector; when redetermining the period the counting direction is changed and the counter counts up as above.
