Abstract
1416510 Screw compressors GARDNER-DENVER CO 24 May 1974 [12 Nov 1973] 23368/74 Heading F1F A helical screw compressor 10 comprises a cylindrical chamber 56 having openings 58, 60 leading to the inlet port 48 and having respective sets of auxiliary ports 62, 64 which communicate with rotor bores 16, 14 respectively, and a rotary control valve-member 66 disposed in chamber 56 and having a helical stepped control edge 96 parallel with the long sides of the oblique ports 62 so that rotation of valve-member 66 progressively covers or uncovers the ports 62 and 64, the valvemember 66 being turned by a wheel 88 which rotates a shaft 86 with a worm-wheel Fig. 3, (not shown) which engages a gear 82 on the valve-member shaft 70, and there being radial bores 100, 102, 104, 106, 108, 110 in valve-member 66 which lead from a central axial passage 90 to convey lubricant from passage 90 to the working chambers between the rotors 26, 28 just after each working chamber has closed itself from the inlet 48. The valve-member 66 is shown in perspective in Fig. 6 and in planar projection in Fig. 8 where the valve-member is illustrated as uncovering one port 64 and two ports 62, i.e. about a 25% reduction from full capacity, and where ports 102 communicate with a port 64 at a location such that liquid would only be injected after the working chamber is closed from the inlet. The auxiliary ports 100-110 decrease in cross-section towards the discharge end so as to reduce the amount of liquid injected as the capacity reduces at constant pressure or to keep it constant if pressure increases as capacity decreases, the compressor being described in use in a system of the latter type Fig. 2, (not shown). An alternative embodiment is also described Figs. 11 to 15, (not shown) in which the inlet port is axial instead of radial, the valve turning means are altered, the helical edge of the valvemember is not stepped, and the pairs of auxiliary bores are replaced by single bores leading into suitably shaped slots in the circumference of the valve-member.
