Abstract

1416417 Blackening aluminium SWISS ALUMINIUM Ltd 10 May 1974 [17 May 1973] 20838/74 Heading C7U [Also in Division G2] The surface of an Al or Al alloy article is blackened by etching the surface in an iron chloride solution, followed by treatment with an aqueous acidic solution of ammonium molybdate and aluminium chloride, and after-treatment with an aqueous alkaline solution. The blackening solution preferably contains ammonium hepta-molybdate and AlCl 3 at a pH of 2-5 and a temperature of 80-92‹C. The alkaline solution, also preferably at 80-92‹C, may contain sodium chromate and sodium carbonate, or may contain ammonia or an ammonia derivative, e.g. hydrazine or hydroxyl amine. In an example, an anodized Al sheet was coated with a photo-sensitive lacquer, covered with a negative and exposed to light. The unexposed areas were etched away and the sheet subjected to the blackening process, wherein only the areas not exposed to light were coloured black.
