Abstract

1415781 Carrier package ITW Ltd 30 Jan 1974 [2 Feb 1973] 5396/73 Heading B8C A package comprises containers 2 having top closure strips 4 received in slits or slots in a carrier of resilient sheet material, each top closure strip 4 having a downwardly facing shoulder or shoulders abutting the upper surfaces of the carrier. The downwardly facing shoulders may be provided by projecting ears 5 at the ends of the closure strip or by notches (44, Fig. 6, not shown) in the ends of the closure strip or by the edges of a closure clip. The slits or slots extend longitudinally of the carrier which also includes a transversely or longitudinally extending handle or handles 12 or (48, Figs. 8-12, not shown). The carrier may be made of polyethylene, ABS, PVC or rubber. An apparatus for applying carriers to the containers comprises a conveyer carrying flanges 18, 20 for locating the containers, and a trough 28 for guiding a continuous length of carriers, supplied from a reel 22, into the nip of a driving roller 24 and an assembly roller 26. The assembly roller 26 carries a transverse knife blade 32 which co-operates with the flanges 20 to separate the carriers from the continuous supply. The apparatus may also include a device (46, Fig. 7, not shown) for cutting notches (44) in the ends of the top closure strips.
