Adhesive tape W is applied along the corner edge of a package A by drawing off a length of tape from a supply web or roll R of width comparable to or greater than the length of the edge of the package to be sealed so that the leading edge of the tape is parallel to the edge of the package, presenting a leading tape portion having a length small in comparison with its width to the package so that on applying pressure thereto, a part of this leading portion adheres to one of the surfaces of the package adjacent the edge to be sealed whilst the remainder of the portion extends beyond this edge, severing the tape portion and then applying pressure to the remaining part of the tape strip so formed to cause it to adhere to the other surface adjacent the edge to be sealed. In one embodiment the tape W is fed by rollers 2 between cutters 3, 4, the moving blade 4 being attached to the pressure applying mechanism. The face of the strip to be cut from the web is made adhesive by applying liquid with a roller, brush or spray 5. The pressure member 6 applies the leading portion of the strip to the package, the strip is severed and simultaneously a pressure roller 12 moves down to cause the trailing portion of the strip S<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 2, to adhere to the vertical face of the package. Other means for severance of the strip, e.g. hot-wire cutting, may be employed. Rollers 14 then move at right angles across the end faces of the package to fold and adhere the projecting end portions of the strip on to the end faces of the package and the remaining upstanding portions F, Fig. 3, are folded on and adhered to the upper face of the package by rollers 19, Fig. 8a (not shown). Similar mechanisms M2, M3, M4, Fig. 8, are provided for operation on each corner of the package. The packages are fed on conveyer means comprising upper and lower rollers C 1 , C 2 , the packages being held in the tape applying position by means of guide plates and movable stops.
