Abstract

1,199,922. Splicing webs. MASSON SCOTT THRISSELL ENG. Ltd., and G. A. B. BYRT. 31. July, 1967 [1 Aug., 1966], No. 34500/66. Heading B8R. [Also in Division B4] Apparatus for butt-splicing the trailing end of an old web 1 to the leading end of a new web 23 comprises a knife 14 and an anvil 6 for cutting the overlapping webs together, and an adhesive tape applicator 11 for applying tape across the joint. The knife 14 and the adhesive tape applicator 11 form part of a rotatable cutting and taping head 5 positioned directly above an anvil 6 and clamps 7 and 8. The knife 14 is carried in a slot 15 in a resilient sheath 41 which is compressible against the anvil 6 to bear the knife for cutting. The head 5 is moved vertically by a toggle mechanism 42 to bring either the knife carrier 10 of the tape applicator 11 into engagement with the anvil 6. The anvil 6 has suction ports 18 to position the old web and is formed of polyutethane to be sufficiently resilient to receive the knife blade without any permanent deformation. When the web-roll change is necessary, the old web 1 is halted on the anvil 6 by the clamps 7 and 8, whereupon the machine being fed receives web from an accumulator (not illustrated) downstream of the splicing apparatus. The leading end of the new web 23 is previously positioned below the cutting head 10 and held by suction against the clamp 8. A strip of adhesive tape is previously applied to the taping head 11 and held by suction ports 17. With the old web 1 halted, the cutting head 10 is moved against the anvil 6 to sever the overlapping webs, and with the return movement the off cut from the new web 23 is held by suction ports 16 against the cutting head 10 downstream of the knife 14. The head 5 is then rotated to bring the tape applicator 11 above the anvil 6, and is lowered to apply the tape 29 to the joint. The clamps 7 and 8 and the tape applicator 11 are released, and at the same time a roller 25 nips the web against a roller 4. An additional adhesive tape 27 is previously applied to the roller 25 and held by suction ports 50. As the web advances, the additional tape 27 is carried carried by the roller 25 and applied to the underside of the joint. Thereafter the roller 25 is lowered, and the splicing apparatus prepared for the next web roll change.
