Abstract
1414859 Finishing edges of sheet material R P STRUCTURES Ltd 12 July 1974 [17 July 1973] 34071/73 Heading B5K A cap press comprises a mould for capping an edge of a board 6 with synthetic resin material 4 and having flap portions 2, 2<SP>1</SP> movable relative to a central portion 1 to positions such that the mould is of channel section in planes perpendicular to the length of the edge, means for holding a board 6 so as to be offered to the mould, means for urging the portion 1 against the edge of the board with the interposition of capping material, and means for urging the portions into their channel-defining positions. Preferably, the board 6 is of solid or ply wood, insulation material, chipboard, hardboard or plastics foam, and the capping material comprises a styrenated unsaturated polyester resin and is reinforced by glass fibres in any form, e.g. woven fabric, chopped strand mat, rovings, surfacingtissues or woven rovings. Other specified reinforcements are carbon fibres and steel wires. In one embodiment, Fig. 3a, accompanying the provisional Specification, the portions 2, 2<SP>1</SP> are hinged to the portion 1 by piano-type hinges 8. In operation, a layer of reinforcing material is laid on the portions 1, 2, 2<SP>1</SP> in the open position thereof and a hardenable unsaturated polyester resin is brushed or sprayed evenly on this layer. If necessary, a release film or a release agent is located between the mould and the reinforcing material. The board 6 is placed with its edge to be capped along the portion 1, Fig. 5 (not shown), the press and board are pressed together and clamped, and the portions 2, 2<SP>1</SP> are turned upwardly through 90 degrees and clamped to hold the edge margins of the reinforced resin layer against the board faces, Fig. 6 (not shown). The assembly is left clamped until the resin hardens. The corners (16) of the finished cap may be very slightly rounded, Fig. 7 (not shown). All of the edges of a board may be capped, in turn or simultaneously. In modifications, the cap may extend over the marginal portion of only one side of the board, Fig. 10 (not shown), or may lie flush with the faces of the board, Fig. 9 (not shown). In another embodiment, Figs. 1a and 2 (both accompanying the complete Specification), the edge of the board 6 and the central portion 1 of the mould are curved. However, portions 2, 2<SP>1</SP> are not hinged to the portion 1 and are movable upwardly to wrap a reinforced resin layer 10 around the edge of the board.
