Abstract

1457106 Laminates; moulding cored beam R P STRUCTURES Ltd 12 July 1974 [17 July 1973] 34106/73 Headings B5N and B5A [Also in Division E1] A method of fabricating a box beam having a core of substantially rectangular cross-section includes covering each of two faces of the core opposite one another with respective layers of reinforced resin material, and moulding on to the core, two caps of reinforced resin material, each cap being moulded around one of two other faces opposite one another and overlying the two edge portions of the said layers of reinforced resin material which lie adjacent to the said other faces, so as to form a laminate of reinforced resin material at each said edge portion. The resin is preferably reinforced with fibrous material e.g. glass fibres in the form of woven cloth, chopped strand mat, rovings, surfacing tissue or woven rovings. Other reinforcing material e.g. carbon fibres or steel wires may be alternatively or additionally incorporated in the resin material applied to one or more of the faces of the core. The resin may be a styreneated unsaturated polyester. The core material may be timber or a polyurethane foam. The covered core may be made by applying one or more layers of reinforced resin to the first two opposed faces of a slab of core material and allowing the resin to harden, the hardening optionally being followed by cutting the faced slab into sections each having one or more layers of resin material on each of the two opposed faces. In the embodiment described the caps are applied with a cup press using either'of the two form of moulds described in Specification 1,414,859.
