Abstract
1414620 Drying gases by cooling ACTRIC Ltd 27 Oct 1972 [27 Oct 1971] 49632/72 Divided out of 1414618 Heading B1L [Also in Divisions Fl and F4] The water vapour content of a stream of moist compressed gas is reduced by lowering its temperature in a heat-exchanger coil 13, part or all of the stream being expanded adiabatically through an orifice 19 to cool the coil 13. The coil 13 is enclosed in a chamber 14 having insulating walls 23. Moisture precipitated from the gas is collected at 17 and the dried gas is taken off at 22. The apparatus may be for dewatering a compressed air supply or for reducing the water content of combustion gases to produce a protective atmosphere for a furnace as described in Specification 1414618. The input gas 1 is taken via a chamber 3 to a compressor 4. The compressed gas is cooled by circulating water in a first heat exchanger 6, any water precipitated being collected at 8 before passing to heat exchanger 13. If the amount of gas taken off is less than that supplied by the compressor the excess is returned to the inlet by way of a reducing valve 12. The gas used to cool the coil 13, still at a pressure above atmospheric, may be taken off at 21 or returned to the inlet 1 via reducing valve 26. Pressure relief valve 25 prevents excessive pressure in chamber 14.
