Abstract
1474602 Storage of organic material GRUMMAN ALLIED INDUSTRIES Inc 7 May 1974 20127/74 Heading A2D [Also in Division F4] A method of creating and maintaining a gaseous atmosphere at a predetermined temperature, sub-atmospheric pressure and high relative humidity in a storage chamber for preserving organic matter comprises bringing ambient air to the required temperature, pressure and relative humidity by causing the ambient air to flow through a restricted opening while reducing the pressure of the air, expanding the air and reducing the relative humidity thereof, causing the expanded air to flow into contact with water to evaporate the water, the expansion of the air and evaporation of the water cooling and humidifying the air, causing the humid air to flow through the chamber and simultaneously removing humid air and gases of respiration of said matter from the chamber, wherein the cooling effect of the expansion and evaporation is modified by changing the temperature of the water when the temperature in the chamber tends to depart from the predetermined temperature. Preferably, air is removed from the chamber at a rate sufficient to remove deleterious gaseous respiration products from the matter being preserved therein so that e.g. there is at least one change per hour of air in the chamber. Suitably the air pressure in the chamber is maintained at or between 4 and 400 mm. Hg absolute, the temperature of the air in the chamber is at or between 32‹F and 48‹F and the relative humidity is near but less than saturation at the corresponding temperature therein. The cooling effect of the expansion and evaporation is preferably modified by changing the rate of flow of air through the chamber. The method may be carried out in the apparatus shown in Fig. 1, wherein air enters the apparatus at inlet 14 and passes via heat exchanger 16 and pressure reduction valve 18 to evaporator 22: The resulting humidified cooled air passes into chamber 16 via nozzle 26, this air impinging upon radiator 32. Air exits the chamber via valve 28. The chamber is provided with a temperature sensor 36 connected to heating element 44. The water in the evaporator may thus be heated in response to the sensor 36 so as to achieve a desired air temperature in chamber 12. In an alternative form of apparatus (Fig. 2, not shown) an oil seal pump is used to produce the vacuum, and the pump oil is used as a heating source for water in the evaporator.
