Abstract

1413843 Storage battery venting arrangement ELECTRIC POWER STORAGE Ltd 25 Jan 1973 [31 Jan 1972] 4517/72 Heading H1B A venting arrangement for a maintenance free lead-acid battery 10 and enabling it to be inverted without loss of electrolyte comprises a cover 15 providing an individual chamber 20 above each cell 11 and a common chamber 30 extending over all the chambers 20. Each cell 11 has a vent tube 21 and the chamber 30 has a vent 31. Four capillary drain tubes 22 extend from each chamber 20 to its associated cell 11. Vents 32, 33 associated with each chamber 20, connect that chamber with the chamber 30. In the inverted position electrolyte enters the chambers 20 but does not read the "top" ends of the vents 32 since the capillary section of the tubes 22 prevents air reacting the cells by passing therethrough. On return to the normal position the electrolyte drains back through the tubes 22. If, when in the inverted position the battery is jolted so that a small quantity of electrolyte reaches the chamber 30 through the vents 32, this electrolyte returns to the chambers 20 through the vents 33 when the battery is restored to its normal attitude.
