Abstract
1413825 Mixing apparatus JAPAN EXLAN CO LTD 25 Oct 1972 [25 Oct 1971] 49308/72 Heading B1C In a method and apparatus for mixing liquids, e.g. for use in polymerisation reactions, two or more of the liquids are introduced into the inlet end of a cylindrical mixing chamber 4 having at least one fixed helical vane 1 arranged axially therein and flows in a volute current along the vane surface and is a shear current through holes or notches 2, 3 in the surface of the vane to the outlet of the chamber. To produce this effect, the apparatus has dimensional characteristics which satisfy the following relationship in which D is the internal diameter of the chamber and S is the cross-sectional flowthrough area of the chamber and is defined as the total area of the holes or notches and the clearance between the inner wall of the chamber and the fixed helical vane when the chamber. and a single turn of the fixed helical vane are projected on an imaginary plane normal to the chamber axis. If more than one vane is used they may be axially spaced and rotationally staggered, Fig. 3, so as to be out of phase. Deflector plates 6, Fig. 4 may partially cover the holes or notches and are inclined to the vane surface at an angle # which is between 20 and 90. For best results it is stated that the following relationships also apply:- where d is the outer peripheral diameter of the vane and P is the pitch of the helical vane.
