Abstract
1413727 Automatic control of meltelectrolytic aluminium production SWISS ALUMINIUM Ltd 16 July 1973 [18 July 1972] 33736/73 Heading C7B [Also in Division G3] In a known type of cell for the recovery of aluminium by electrolysis of aluminium oxide in a fluoride melt, the instantaneous cell resistance is calculated by a computer from the cell base voltage and base current as sampled at regular intervals, the sampling being discontinued if the cell is disturbed by anode effects or is being tapped or serviced e.g. an anode being replaced. The instantaneous resistance is compared with a base resistance, the absolute value of any differences being summed to form a cumulative total. If a cell disturbance causes this total to exceed a pre-set value, the cell resistance is increased temporarily by automatically or manually increasing the cell interpolar distances until the disturbance is eliminated, when the original interpolar distances are restored. If the total does not exceed the given value within a given period then the cumulative total is returned to zero. The cell resistance may be sampled every 15 to 60 seconds for a period of 1 to 8 hours.
