Abstract
1413726 Automatic control of meltelectrolytic aluminium production SWISS ALUMINIUM Ltd 16 July 1973 [18 July 1972] 33735/73 Heading C7B [Also in Division G3] In a known type of cell for recovery of aluminium by electrolysis of aluminium oxide in a fluoride melt, the electrical energy supplied to the cell is measured over successive intervals of time and compared in each interval with a desired value, any differences being added to form a cumulative total, the cell average interpolar distance being varied, if the total exceeds a pre-set value, to establish a rate of energy supply to the cell approaching a predetermined rate. In the embodiment, a computer calculates the energy supplied from the product of the cell base voltage, cell current and the sampling time interval, and calculates the energy supply desired value according to the type and condition of the cell. The average interpolar distance may be varied by moving all the cell anodes or by moving only the anode whose interpolar distance is less than that of the other anodes. The cumulative total can be returned to zero after each adjustment of the interpolar distance, which may be made in steps.
