Abstract

1456569 Tapping aluminium from electrolytic cells SWISS ALUMINIUM Ltd 7 Aug 1974 [9 Aug 1973] 34734/74 Heading C7B A method of tapping molten Al from a cell in which Al 2 O 3 in a fluoride melt is electrolyzed comprises (a) measuring a succession of instantaneous ohmic resistance values of the cell over a period of time within 30-60 minutes after the first "normal cell service" following the previous tapping, smoothing these values and calculating the difference between the smoothed value at the end of the period and the predetermined base resistance of the cell; (b) adjusting the anode beam height to reduce this difference to below a predetermined limiting value; (c) repeating steps (a) and (b) but with respect to a succession of instantaneous resistance values measured over a period of time within 30-60 mins after the last "normal cell service" before next tapping the cell; and (d) tapping off H mm. of molten Al where H = 1m.t.f. +#B in which 1m is the mean cell D.C. current (kA), t is time in hours (h) between successive tappings, f is a proportionality factor representing the anode burn rate in mm/kAh (usually f = 0À0056-0À0063) and #B is the difference in mm. between the adjusted heights of the anode beam obtained in step (b) and step (c). A "normal cell service" occurs when the cell crust is routinely broken-in and extra Al 2 O 3 is added and excludes servicing necessitated by occurrence of an anode effect. Operations may be controlled throughout by computer, tapping being with a conventional suction pipe. The height H which is tapped may be controlled by maintaining the interpolar distance constant during tapping (controlled by maintaining cell resistance constant) and monitoring the distance moved by the anode beam during this step.
