Abstract

1413254 Alumina CONTINENTAL OIL CO 19 Jan 1973 [19 Jan 1972] 2850/73 Heading C1A An aqueous alumina "slurry' (including alumina/water mixtures with the consistency of a wet sand cake), is dried by contacting with the vapour of an alcohol containing 2-8 carbon atoms, whereby alumina having a pore volume at least 1À0 c.c./g. a loose bulk density less than 35 lb./ft.<SP>3</SP> and a surface area of at least 260 m.<SP>2</SP>/g. is produced. The slurry may contain less than 32% by weight of Al 2 O 3 and the product may contain at least 50% by weight of Al 2 O 3 . The average pore diameter may be 80-258 Š and preferably at least 50% of the pore volume is constituted by pores of diameter <1000 Š. The product alumina may be treated with superheated steam and the slurry may be prepared by the hydrolysis of an aluminium alkoxide.
