Abstract

1412981 Rotary positive-displacement fluidmachines TRADE & INDUSTRY SECRETARY OF STATE FOR 19 Jan 1973 [21 Jan 1972] 2949/72 Heading F1F In a rotating-piston machine, which may be a pump or blower, the piston 3 has a part-spherical rim 8 and flat surfaces 5, 6 with a part-cylindrical surface 7 therebetween, the casing having a flat wall 14 that causes the piston to pivot on trunnions 2 fixed to a shaft 1 when the latter is rotated by e.g. an electric motor or I.C. engine. Diametrally disposed inlet and exhaust ports, of which one is indicated at P, are formed in part-spherical portions of the casing co-operating with the rim 8, which controls these ports. The wall 14 may be replaced with a disc whose inclination can be adjusted to vary the output, Fig.4 (not shown). In another embodiment, Fig.2 (not shown), the surfaces 5, 6 are part conic and the surface 7 is part spherical and engages with a part spherical portion of a wall (16) replacing the wall 14, which portion serves as a thrust bearing. The piston may have a central cap (17), Fig.3 (not shown), made of metal-filled P.T.F.E. and serving as a journal, which engages with the wall 14. The thrust bearing or rotor portion engaging therewith may be composed of, or mounted on, a flexible and resilient material e.g. metal-filled P.T.F.E. The bearing may be composed of steel and adhesively mounted on a flexible and resilient rubber pad.
