Abstract

1412810 Air heaters; combustion apparatus BORG-WARNER CORP 13 Aug 1973 [21 Sept 1972] 38263/73 Headings F4S and F4B In an air heater comprising a burner assembly 10, a combustion chamber 16 and a U-shaped tubular heat exchange element 14 extending through a wall 22 into the path of the air to be heated, secondary combustion air from a blower 30 is supplied to the combustion chamber 16 through a plurality of tangentially directed inlet openings 49 formed by bent tabs 50 cut out of the side wall of a cylindrically shaped element 48. The tangential injection of combustion air serves to produce a swirling path for the combustion products flowing through the heat exchange element 14. A second blower 39 connected to the outlet 18 of the element 14 maintains a negative pressure within the U- shaped element and discharges the products into a flue 46. Both blowers 30 and 40 are driven by a single motor 34.
